Joomla SEO Tips for the Beginner
By default, Joomla isn’t exactly search engine friendly. You need to work on it a bit to improve this area. The first thing that you will notice when you get started with the SEO work on a Joomla site is the page URL. Page URL’s that are generated by Joomla are not really search engine friendly. They have certain query parameters that do not provide enough information for search engines to properly index and rank your pages. When you start with on-page optimization, the first thing you have to pay attention to is the page URL that you would like to optimize. Make sure it is meaningful and informative with all the most important keywords and an .html extension.

  • Use Search Engine Friendly URL’s: Make sure your website’s URL is search engine friendly. Start by using the default Joomla SEF plug-in, which is generally not activated but has to be activated by going to the global configuration page. You could also use third part paid or free components that have additional features.

  • Create catchy Page Titles for all your Web Pages: Most Joomla web pages come with default titles that can be quite boring. If you want to change it, then it can be a bit tricky. The page title is one of the main on=page elements that is considered by the search engines when ranking websites. So, always give your page titles meaning by adding relevant keywords. Go to the Menu Manager and click on the main menu, then open+ the home tab from the list that comes. On the right hand side you will see a number of parameters that can be changed. Open this and change the field that mentions Page Title.

  • Set up the Meta data for each of your web pages: It is important to optimize your meta data. Focus on the meta descriptions instead of the keywords. Descriptions should be well written and relevant to the page and should be 160 characters long. Set up many individual sets of keywords and descriptions for each of your web pages.
